ZeroTech Thrive 20-60x85 spotting scope

First impressions: ZeroTech Thrive 20-60×85 spotting scope

ZeroTech has complemented its top-shelf Trace Advanced spotting scope the new Thrive 20-60x85mm model which provides very good optical performance at a very attractive price tag.

But don’t let the lower price fool you, as the clarity is up there with some of the best I’ve viewed.

The ZeroTech provides particularly good image quality for its price, whether direct to your eye or into your mobile’s camera

The Thrive spotter’s 85mm objective lens is slightly larger than the Traced Advanced’s 80mm, offering more light-gathering capability and providing a bright, clear image.

The combined-prism style Trace has fully broadband multi-coated (FBMC) lenses for excellent image quality and enhanced clarity, while also reducing glare.

Its IPX5 waterproof rating ensures reliable performance even in wet weather conditions.

The ocular and objective lenses have dust caps, and the objective includes an extendable sunshade tube that doubles as protection for the lens against rain or snow.

Smooth and easy focusing is achieved thanks to a centre-tube focus system conveniently located on the scope’s body.

Whether checking a target at long range or evaluating trophy potential on a buck or stag out yonder, I like as much magnification as possible. The Thrive offers just that, with 20-60x magnification that allows detailed observation of your target at long range.

The large knurled ring provides smooth focus adjustment, the smaller upper ring is for zoom, and the angled eye piece is comfortable to use

Overall, while the scope looks quite chunky, I was surprised to find it only weighs 1.9kg without a tripod.

That’s a lot less than my bulky Nikon SLR with long-range lens to capture live photos and video.

While out testing the Thrive 20-60x spotting scope on a recent goat hunt, I decided to attach my phone via an adapter to asses quality at long range. As expected, I captured excellent video through the 85mm objective with its high light transmission and clear image.

That said, when videoing, you do tend to lose a little quality once the magnification goes beyond 40x power, but that’s expected with any comparable spotting scope.

At the range, my old spotter only offered 40x magnification which wasn’t quite enough to evaluate shots at 200 metres or more. The 20-60x takes care of that now.

The Thrive spotter comes with a protective cover that can be left in place when you’re using the scope

ZeroTech has added the option of attaching the spotting scope to a tripod via a standard ¼x20 thread or alternatively an integrated ARCA-compatible tripod adaptor.

The Thrive spotting scope also comes with a neoprene padded soft cover that can be removed or left on while it is in use.

A full-length carry case with separate zip-up objective cover and carry handles ensures safe and easy transport with quick access to the spotter when needed.

ZeroTech is an Australian company offering a lifetime warranty on its products. The Thrive 20-60x85mm has a RRP of $699, representing excellent value for money.
