F1 legend Stewart missed his shot
Formula 1 legend Jackie Stewart says that not making the English Olympic shooting team is his greatest disappointment. Prior to the 1960 Olympics, he was one of four team mates competing for two places in the trap event, and he missed out by one shot. “I was furiously disappointed that I myself had let myself down. In shooting, you can’t blame the car, it wasn’t any of the cartridges and it certainly wasn’t the gun,” said the man who had spent his earlier years as a top-level competitive shooter. The full story is well worth reading.
Old guns hinder Iraqi hopes
Iraq’s Olympic shooter is optimistic but not happy. Noor Aamer Jassim, one of only eight Iraqis competing in London from later this month, says the team is using old and outdated equipment, including weapons and ammunition. The nation’s strife over the past decade and more has made life hard for the Olympians, but Jassim still aims to win a medal.
Olympic divorce?
Bureaucratic officiousness has threatened to separate Aussie Olympic shooters Russell and Lauryn Mark in their London accommodation. The married couple was told they could not billet together, and that Russell was to be housed with Michael Diamond. The official reason: the bathroom sharing ratio (male to female) would be breached. Russell believes it may have been pay-back for his recent criticism of the Olympic Committee over its ban on sleeping tablets. However, sense prevailed and the pair will be allowed to sleep together.
Fox drive invitations
Invitations are open for two fox drives with Field and Game Australia, coming up on the weekend after this. If you want to take part on 21-22 July on private property near Lake Boga, you’ll need to RSVP today. The Grampians branch is hosting a drive on the 22nd near St Arnaud. Details, including contact info, are available on the FGA website.
Hunter charged over NZ death
Police in New Zealand have charged a hunter with careless use of a firearm over the death of another hunter, Cam McDonald, last Easter. Christopher Dummer, 54, allegedly shot McDonald, 29, in the head, killing him instantly. McDonald was hunting with another man, and they were using a call to lure a deer. Four other hunters, including Dummer, were also hunting in pairs in the Aorangi Forest Park at the same time.
