Quick look: SmartRest MaXbox II gun rest

This is the gun rest that got SmartRest off the ground — a case of big things growing from simple things. The Australian company has done very well with the MaXbox since releasing it back in 2012.

It’s a truly simple concept: take a block of high-density foam and turn it into a surprisingly effective gun rest that you can deploy almost anywhere, from a solid bench to impromptu field positions.

I’ve used one so often the years (including when I did some marketing work for SmartRest in a previous job) that I can tell you without hesitation it provides steady support for an accurate shot.

I’ve used it on a bench, from the roof and bonnet of a ute, off fence posts, on the ground and from fallen logs.

It’s not a cube, but has a tall side and a low side for better flexibility. In both orientations you’ve got slots for wide or narrow rifle stocks, too.

SmartRest has over the years added magnets to the keep MaXbox stuck to roofs as you cruise around, and a carry strap for the bush. It might be a little bulky to carry in thick country but it’s light at only 330 grams.

For $79 you can get a very straightforward but effective and versatile gun rest that demonstrates you don’t need all the flash stuff to shoot well.
