Shooters to rally in Perth against new gun laws

The most significant pro-firearms rally in Western Australia for more than two decades is being organised in Perth for Saturday, 8 February, 2025.

Several entities including Shooters Union, Politics Reloaded and individual shooters are organising the rally, which will be held at the Supreme Court Gardens in Perth from 10.30am.

The organisers have confirmed they have received a permit for the rally from West Australia Police and reiterated that the Western Australia Gun Rally will not be a “march through the streets” event, but taking place in one location and will feature speakers from a number of pro-shooting groups and political parties.

Shooters Union Western Australia state advocate Steve Harrison, who is one of the event’s key organisers, said licensed shooters in Western Australia were furious with how they had been treated and were demanding tangible action be taken — which was why the rally was being organised.

“People have had a gutful of the arrogance and lies from the Police Minister and Labor politicians over these laws,” he said.

“There are 90,000 licensed shooters in Western Australia and they have not been involved in drafting the laws in any meaningful way – you only have to look at the recently published  Regulations, which were not run past any of the major shooting organisations before being released a couple of days before Christmas.

“30,000 people signed a petition earlier this year calling for the gun laws to be put through a proper consultation and review process, and it was tossed in the bin. Numerous shooters have reported contacting their Labor MPs about the laws and essentially being told ‘We don’t care, we support the laws’. It’s a middle finger to how democracy is supposed to work.”

Mr Harrison said the rally was about sending a clear message not only to politicians in Western Australia, but to shooters around the country, that shooters would not take this abuse in silence.

“This is about the appalling treatment of 90,000 law-abiding, upstanding members of the Western Australian community, and how the Government is clearly going to start using these tactics on other community groups it doesn’t like,” he said.

“The West Australian government has decided it openly hates tens of thousands of its own citizens, considers them beneath contempt, and is essentially seizing potentially millions of dollars in private property based entirely on the scared feelings of out-of-touch bureaucrats and politicians.”

He said the rally organisers were planning a respectful, civil event and were keeping the focus entirely on the firearm laws and not fringe issues, and encouraged attendees to bring their families with them to enjoy a day out in central Perth.

“We are asking attendees to wear neat casual clothing, bring their families, and to be sun-smart,” he said.

“It’s a great location and there’s plenty of family-friendly activities in the area for after the rally, including Perth Zoo, lunch at a café, or doing some shopping in the city.”
