WA Shadow Attorney-General pushes for proper review of new gun laws

Western Australia Shadow Attorney-General Nick Goiran continues to advocate for the state’s licensed firearm owners, calling on shooters to weigh in on having the hated new gun laws properly reviewed by a parliamentary committee.

Mr Goiran has given formal notice of his intention to refer the Firearms Act 2024 to the Standing Committee on Legislation for a full review and report.

This would include “review[ing] the operation, effectiveness and implementation of those parts of the act, including any subsidiary legislation, that have come into operation at the time that the inquiry is commenced”.

In an email to supporters, Mr Goiran reiterated a commitment he made to shooters last year, pledging to follow up on controversial guns laws once parliament resumed after the March state election.

“The facts are that the Cook Labor Government arrogantly guillotined debate time in the upper house, cut off questions and forced a vote without allowing the Bill the thorough consideration they had promised and which it deserved,” he said.

He explained that the ALP maintains control of Western Australia’s Legislative Council (upper house) until 22 May.

As a result, the earliest opportunity to debate and pass Mr Gorian’s motion will be Wednesday, 28 May, and he called on Western Australia shooters to help get it across the line.

“In order for the motion to succeed, we need 19 upper house members to support the motion,” Mr Goiran said.

“From 22 May 2025, there will be 21 non-government members of the upper house. From that day, it will be important for you to reach out to all members of the upper house to seek their support for the motion.”

He said the message WA shooters needed to convey to their upper house MPs was simple: “The government promised the new law would be subject to ‘full scrutiny’ — that didn’t happen and supporting this motion will right this wrong.

“After all, if the new law is as good as the former Police Minister insisted it was, what is to be feared from a close review by parliament’s specialist committee?” he asked.

Shooters Union WA state advocate Steve Harrison welcomed the news, saying the union fully supported the move.

“Nick Goiran’s tenacity to make the Labor Government accountable for poorly structured and intrusive firearms legislation is applauded,” he said.
