Australian firearms and munitions company NIOA will build a brand-new $121 million ($US76.4m) facility for American arms manufacturer Barrett, boosting the US company’s capabilities and doubling its workforce.
The Barrett Manufacturing & Technology Campus (BMTC) is due to open in 2027 to handle everything from the design to the distribution of all types of commercial firearms, advanced military small arms and various kinds of specialist ammunition.
“The BMTC will serve as our primary firearms manufacturing site globally and demonstrates our commitment as a major American manufacturer catering to both the commercial and military markets,” Rob Nioa, CEO of NIOA Group, said.
The announcement is the latest move in an aggressive international expansion by NIOA, which has significant presence in Australia, the US, the UK and NZ as well as owning the Australian Missile Corporation and having a joint venture with Germany’s Rheinmetall.
NIOA purchased Barrett last year, after distributing the rifles in Australia for around 15 years.
No details about future products were revealed but Barrett hinted at an expanding range.
“The BMTC will be an internationally recognised headquarters of firearms excellence, advancing our manufacturing and research capabilities as well as revolutionising our product offerings,” Barrett CEO Bryan James said.
The new facility will be virtually next door to Barrett’s existing facility in Tennessee, USA, built over 69 hectares (170 acres) and described as a “cutting-edge campus-style environment that integrates corporate headquarters, R&D capabilities, manufacturing, secure warehouse and logistics hub”.
