Winchester’s new 42MAX rimfire ammo

Winchester’s new 42Max .22 rimfire ammo has velocity, bullet weight, accuracy – everything the hunter and plinker could desire.

The “Big Red W” outfit has introduced two new Long Rifle rimfire cartridges that will score high in the small game hunting field. Winchester takes shooter’s interests seriously when they design .22 ammunition because they sell more of it than all the other calibres put together. The company’s goal is to produce the best ammunition possible to attract the largest number of shooters. What do shooters look for in .22 rimfire? First and foremost, they demand accuracy, but with the proliferation of cheap chronographs like the Shooting Chrony, velocity has also become important.

Both of the 42Max loads are Long Rifle with a truncatedcone style of bullet weighing 42 grains instead of the common 40 grain weight. This is the same weight of bullet that Winchester used to load in their Super Silhouette ammo at 1220 fps. Both 42Max bullets are hollow-pointed. The bullets appear to have identical form, but the Subsonic is plain unplated lead (presumably made of softer lead to expand more readily at the lower muzzle velocity of 1065 fps) and has a larger cavity in its nose.

The 42gn bullet in the Power Point 42Max is copperplated and has a slightly smaller cavity in its nose. A nominal muzzle velocity of 1280fps delivers more muzzle energy – 153 ft/lb against 106 ft/lb for its Subsonic counterpart.

The 42gn truncated-cone bullet is the usual “heel base” type, with the portion outside the cartridge case the same diameter as the case, and the dished “heel” small enough to fit inside and be “toe crimped.” The heel expands to fill the barrel under the impulse of the powder gases when the cartridge is fired.
