Zeiss releases new, lighter Conquest HDX binocular line

The new Zeiss Conquest HDX binoculars, released this week, feature a lighter design while retaining the excellent optics and specifications of the HD models they are replacing.

The popular and practical 8×42 and 10×42 models have shed the most weight, being 10% lighter at 715 grams, 80g less than the 795g HD equivalent.

The other models have benefitted from smaller improvement but it is there nonetheless.

As with the HD range, the HDX 8x and 10x magnification with 32, 42, and 56mm objective lenses, as well as a 15×56 model.

The new binoculars are positioned as “premium all-rounders” in Zeiss’s literature, replacing the HD versions to sit above the Terra line-up and below the more high-end Victory models in the Zeiss range.

Conquest HDX binoculars are a roof-prism design, though not all use the same type of prism.

The models with a 32mm and 42mm objective lenses feature the shorter Schmidt-Pechan prism design, helping keep them fairly compact.

Abbe-Konig prisms in the larger 56mm models, and have superior optical qualities, such as more light transmission and fewer reflections, although they cost more.

Claimed light transmission across the HDX range is 90%, and the lenses use the Zeiss T* coatings that have long provided a very clear view.

Extra-low dispersion glass, special lenses and what Zeiss calls FieldFlattener technology complete the list of features that create the optical performance Zeiss is renowned for.

The layout of the body is the same as the robust HD, but it is now made from magnesium, which is light as well as fairly stable in varying temperatures.

The HDX has some new features such as a lockable diopter setting so they are not accidentally put out of focus, and a grippier finish of the rubber armour on the body, and an easy-to-use tripod mounting interface.

The new adjustable eye cups are removable and said to be more comfortable and durable.

The HDX also inherits the flip-down lens caps, carry case and strap of the Zeiss SFL binoculars.

The Conquest HDX range is available from gun shops and other optics outlets. More details are available on the OSA Australia website.
