Australia Cup 2 kicks off

The second stage of the Australian International Shooting Limited rifle and pistol Australia Cup series kicks off today at the Belmont Shooting Complex in Brisbane.

Ten of Australia’s 2012 London Olympians and Paralympians will compete in the event as they aim to make the Australia Cup Final at the end of 2013.

2008 Beijing Olympic bronze medallist Warren Potent will feature in one of the more anticipated duels of the weekend as he aims to take down local hopeful and 2012 Olympian Dane Sampson in the men’s 50m prone rifle.

Potent is still ranked number one in Australia in the discipline but Sampson has continued to close the gap over the last 12 months.

In the pistol events across the weekend most of the focus will be on five time Olympian Lalita Yauhleuskaya with the Victorian entered in the two women’s 10m air pistol events, as well as the women’s 25m sport pistol. Her main challenge is expected to come from Focus 2016 Squad member Emily Esposito.

With the selection process for the 2014 Australian Commonwealth Games team due to commence on 1 April, all athletes will be looking to improve their form as they bid to make the team for Glasgow.

Competition commenced at 9am with the women’s and men’s 10m air pistol events.
