Ballot entries open for best deer-hunting blocks in NSW state forests

Entries are now open for the ballot to hunt two of the best deer habitats on public land in NSW during the 2025 fallow rut.

Due to the popularity of Maragle South Sate Forest and Mannus State Forest in the peak hunting period (March-April annually), the regular R-licence online booking system is suspended and permission is instead available only to those drawn from the ballots.

The NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), which runs the R-licence program and the ballots,  states the ballots “provide a fair and equitable opportunity for all R-Licensed hunters to hunt on public land during the most popular time of year”.

There are 51 permits available for Maragle South State Forest (39 individual permits and 12 youth permits, the latter covering 6 minors and 6 accompanying adults); 32 permits for Mannus State Forest Seymours section (26 individual permits and 6 youth permits – 3 minors, 3 accompanying adults); and 32 permits (26 individual permits and 6 youth permits – 3 minors, three accompanying adults) for the section of Mannus State Forest designated for bow-hunting only.

They will cover the period from 1 March until May 3. Normal bookings are available before 1 March and after 3 May.

Other state forests are unaffected and online bookings are available as usual.

Ballot registrations close at 11:59pm AEDT on 17 November; entries are free.

He has been interested in firearms as long as he can remember, and is particularly interested in military and police firearms from the 19th Century to the present. In addition to historical and collectible firearms, he is also a keen video gamer and has written for several major newspapers and websites on that subject.
