Victorian duck hunters sometimes just can’t win with the media. While they have worked tirelessly to conserve, preserve and improve Victorian wetlands for the good of future generations of all outdoor interests as well as hunters, an article like this Age opinion piece from “The Fauves” songwriter and freelance writer Andrew Cox comes along just to point bout how evil the rest of the population should feel about hunting.
He uses the often-abused tactic of painting hunters as males who need to kill defenceless small animals to prove their masculinity, while pointedly saying that shotgunners drink alcohol while shooting. While we know his assertions are far from the truth, it would be nice if he actually asked duck hunters what their motivations actually were, rather than promulgating a view of the worst case possible, especially when you consider what a lawful sector of the wider community, LAFOs are.
After all, I can imagine the wealth of broad outdoor experience and in-depth knowledge of firearms, hunting and lawful hunting culture a Fauves songwriter could bring to the discussion – NOT!
I’d hope this article prompts some of our readers to send their thoughts on this article to The Age, to correct Cox’s balderdash.
