Hens takes fifth in Plzen

Australia’s rifle shooters, Jennifer Hens and Dane Sampson, have just returned from their European tour, after competing in two international events, the ISCH in Hannover and the GP of Liberation in Plzen.

The Grand Prix of Liberation posed the second leg of their tour. The competition, which has traditionally been a Running Target competition, was recently updated with 74 Sius Ascor electronic targets in the 50m shooting range.

The competition attracted more than 530 athletes from 32 countries. The popularity of this event is also due in part to its timing, which marks the actual liberation of Plzen by the US Army in 1945.

Unfortunately, the weather was only slightly better than the cold in Hannover, especially in the morning, when the temperature didn’t cross 7°C.

Despite the odds, both athletes did better than in Hannover. Hens achieved her best placing in prone, where she finished with a result of 593 (PQS) in fifth place, which was only one point under the podium (out of 97 competitors).

Sampson shot the same result in prone as well, but among 120 competitors in the men’s category and after decimals scoring (620.7/103.5 avg ) it earned him 26th place.

In the 3P match Sampson improved on his solid result from Hannover by 6 points and shot 1157.

Hens shot 93 points only in her second series in prone during 3×20 competition (her barrel accidentally touched the monitor) depriving her of a better result than 570.

The Air Rifle Competition was the very first competition in Plzen for Hens and the very last for Sampson. Hens finished with a result of 408.2 (391), while Sampson’s 615.0 (585) was just good enough to get him placed in the middle of the result list.
