Vella triumphs in Australia Cup

Adam Vella produced an excellent gold medal match performance to seal victory in the men’s trap at Australia Cup 1 for shotgun in Adelaide over the weekend.

The two-time Olympian set the pace in the competition over the five rounds of qualifying, recording scores of 24, 24, 24, 23 and 24 for a total of 119.

Vella’s score of 119 saw him qualify first for the semi-finals ahead of Frank Minici (118), Michael Coles (117), Ross Liersch (116), Joshua Collard (114) and Ross Walsh (114).

In the semi-finals Minici set the pace with 13 single barrel hits from 15, qualifying for the gold medal match one target ahead of Vella.

Vella however proved too strong in the gold medal match, hitting 13 targets to triumph by five, while Liersch secured the bronze medal over Walsh.

In the women’s trap Laetisha Scanlan maintained her 100 per cent start to 2013 with another excellent display of single barrel final shooting.

Scanlan had qualified in second place for the semi-finals, one target behind fellow Focus 2016 Squad member Catherine Skinner, who had shot 71.

Scanlan recorded 13 hits in the semi-final, one clear of Anna Shedrina, before matching the score in the final to win gold by three targets. Skinner took home the bronze medal with 14 targets in her shoot off against Suzy Balogh.

In other results across the weekend Laura Coles won gold in the women’s skeet ahead of Zita Dettori and Lauryn Mark, while 2012 Olympian Keith Ferguson won the men’s skeet event after shooting 14 targets in his gold medal match victory over Daniel Wear.

Tom Turner had won the first event on the program last Friday, with the 2004 Athens Olympian prevailing over Adam Vella in the final by just one target.
