Sauer Puss: the single best shot I ever pulled off in the field. It was 200 metres, steep downhill rested on a rickety stump and the cat was half obscured. The Sauer .30-06 sure ruined his future.

Meet the team: Marcus O’Dean

Marcus O’Dean, Brisbane, QLD.

When did you first start hunting?

When I was 14, at a schoolmate’s property in Forbes, NSW.

Whistling in predators.

What’s your favourite hunting destination?

Bungonia region.

Tell us about the top three favourite firearms that you own (or bows).

1. CZ Full Stock .223 with Nikon 2-7x M223 scope. Light, handy, accurate enough and will deck everything up to medium game if you do your bit.

2. Sauer .30-06 with Zeiss Conquest 3-9×40. Accurate, hard-hitting and durable.

3. My No1 Mk3* .303 Service Rifle with iron/open sights. Just plain fun to rattle off 20 rounds in a minute.

2007.

What do you enjoy about writing/working for a hunting magazine?

Meeting and talking to other hunters and shooters.

What is the best or most satisfying article you have written for Sporting Shooter?

Hot Foxes. There is nothing better than walking the hills, creeks and paddocks and whistling foxes in previously un-whistled territory. This hot February day, Alex and I took a midday break in the shade, before moving on to deck another four or five foxes. The combination of 12 gauge and .22 Magnum was unbeatable that day.

Federal Buff Hunt. A memento of a Nioa-sponsored trip where a bunch of Australian gun writers got to cull heaps of buffalo with the aid of helicopters in stunning NT floodplain country. The bonus was getting to see the oldest rock art in the world in Aboriginals’ caves. Awe inspiring and humbling.
