The Cost of Control: Shooters Union to reveal high price of gun buyback

A seminar is being held in the most marginal seat of NSW next week to hear the results of an economic study into the true costs of new firearm laws and the proposed gun buyback.

Shooters Union Australia’s Cost of Control community event on Tuesday, 23 June will for the first time reveal the cost-benefit analysis of of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s mooted buyback.

The union commissioned an independent study by Tulipwood Economics into what the buyback would cost Victoria and the same modelling is expected to be behind the NSW figures that will be revealed at the event.

The Victorian outcome was damning of the buyback, which is expected to be rolled out in NSW after September this year.

The study calculated the buyback would cost Victoria $99 to create less than $1 worth of public benefits — a massive loss that will have to be borne by taxpayers.

“When Parliament makes law-abiding firearm owners the scapegoat for community safety, ordinary people bear the cost,” Shooters Union president Graham Park said.

“Higher fees, more red tape, and pressure on clubs, ranges, small businesses, farmers and sporting communities. Less respect for people who already follow the law.”

He said the event would explain what the costs would mean for the NSW economy and said it was no accident that it was being held in the western Sydney suburb of Penrith — in the most marginal government-held seat in NSW — on the state budget day.

“A strong turnout will send a clear message: shooters, their families, their businesses and their supporters are organised, paying attention and ready to be heard at the March 2027 State Election,” Mr Park said.

He said that at the event, Shooters Union would release:

  • The true cost of the NSW proposed gun buyback on shooters and their communities
  • The gap between the government’s budget and the real economic impact
  • Shooters’ political allies and adversaries
  • Shooters Union’s plan for how responsible firearm owners can fight back.

The Cost of Control event will be held at the Penrith Panthers League Club from 6.30pm until 8.30. Tickets are limited so registration is essential. More details and registration are available here.
