Aimpoint electronic sights

Aiming with the Aimpoint is dead easy! All the shooter has to do is dab the lighted red dot on the target and press the trigger.

SIGHTING EQUIPMENT FOR RIFLES offers several options. Open sights are standard on dangerous game rifles, but the vast majority of rifles have no sights at all since the telescopic sight is by far the most popular for use with not only target/varmint but big game hunting rifles because it allows precise aim to be taken on distant targets. The modern riflescope is a rugged and dependable optical instrument which seldom gets put out of commission from rough treatment or extremes of temperature and weather.

From time to time there have been departures from the conventional telescopic sight. World War II speeded up the development of optical sights, particularly for anti-aircraft guns. This concept was incorporated in the Nydar sight for shotgun use during the post-war years. But there was another category of sights based upon the collimator principle, broadly referred to as “reflexive” sights.

A Swedish company, Aimpoint, built the first red dot sight in 1974. It was similar in appearance, but somewhat smaller and a good deal more rugged than the average rifle scope, but you couldn’t see through the sight at all. They were designed to be used with both eyes open. You saw the dot with one eye and the target with the other. The right eye (righthanded shooter) looks at the sight and observes a red dot, while the left eye sees the target clearly and superimposes the red dot on the target. This kind of “reflexive” sight offered several advantages over a scope.
