THE .22 BOLT-ACTION IS, for the majority of rimfire nimrods, more a tool than something to be proud of, but there’s still plenty of people who are looking for something special – a rifle with outstanding characteristics and a higher degree of quality – that they can not only use, but brag about. Such a rifle is the new CZ ZKM 453 2E Premium which has no parallel in its category now that Kimber has discontinued its boltaction rimfire.
At 1030mm and 2.72kg bare, the Premium is a solidly built rifle that oozes quality and inspires confidence, reminding us of a bygone era when blued steel and walnut reigned supreme. The rifle has no bells and whistles, or flashy features such as a high gloss finish.
Instead it looks conservatively businesslike – understated rather than overstated – and obviously intended for field use instead of being there just to look at.
The Premium’s hammer-forged, blued-steel barrel measures 560mm, has a 1:16-inch twist and recessed target crown, and a graceful contour that gently tapers to 14.50mm at the muzzle. It’s fluted and threaded into a receiver machined from a billet of steel. Integral 10mm dovetail grooves accept standard tip-off rimfire scope mounts, and CZ furnishes its own stout machined Premium rings at no extra cost.
The rifle was designed to meet requirements as a small game rifle and thus has no open sights. All of the exterior metal parts of the rifle are smoothly polished and deeply blued, excepting the bolt body which is engine turned (damascened).The bolt locks at the rear using the root of the bolt handle and an opposing lug on the left side which engages a recess in the left receiver wall. The bolt handle is dished and swept back to provide extra clearance for scopes with a large eyepiece.
