ON A MEET AND greet to Zen Imports to exchange Christmas greetings last year, I got to meet David and Michael Yates, who import and distribute many top products for the outdoors industry. Having reviewed a couple of LED Lenser lights recently, I had become a convert and my curiosity was pricked, so I nailed David down and questioned him extensively about these great products. David is what you may call an “enthusiast” for LED Lenser torches and he told me some interesting stuff.
First up, LED Lenser products are German designed and engineered and manufactured in their own state-of-the-art factory in China. All aspects of manufacturing are controlled to produce a peerless product that is also reasonably priced.
He also explained to me just why LED Lensers are so bright and why they consume so little power. The secret is in the design of the reflector/lens unit which incorporates the lens science from Galileo and the reflector work by Sir Isaac Newton. Other flashlights have separate reflectors and lenses which produce unavoidable holes in the light patterns thrown and more power has to be drawn to get a decent beam. The LED Lenser, in contrast, draws a tiny amount of current through very efficient gold conductors and then concentrates and magnifies the available light to produce massively strong beams. This translates into environmental benefits because less batteries are consumed to go into earthfill and of course, there are obvious economic benefits for the user.
