Rifle Cleaning with AFI

It had bee n a while since I had stocked up on cleaning brushes for my smaller calibres so it was fortuitous that XTek sent me some sets of cleaning gear from a new Australian manufacturer, Australian Firepower Industries. Established in 2005 AFI, from central west NSW, specialises in the manufacture of gun cleaning brushes and associated products. AFI is 100% Australian-owned and all of their products are 100% Australian-made using only the best of materials. Their brushes are available in .22, .243/6mm, .25, 6.5mm, .270, 7mm, .30, .338, .45 and 12GA.

The choice of brush materials includes phosphor bronze, bristle nylon, Australian wool and brass. In addition to brushes, AFI also produce spear-point jags, loops and patches. All of these have the standard US thread. I asked XTek’s Chris Burton if cleaning rods were on the horizon and he said that that was most likely in the near future.

As it happened, the day that the AFI products hit my desk I was on my way out to the range to shoot my old .270 custom Mauser and my new CZ .223. Although I am a pretty thorough cleaner and maintainer of my firearms, all of my smaller bronze brushes were showing signs of wear and frankly, were beyond their use-by date. Shooters should be aware that even the best quality bore brushes only have a limited life and shoulD be renewed regularly in the interest
of effective cleaning.
