Flat-shooting .257 Weatherby Magnum

Q: I have a custom rifle on the Winchester Model 70 action in .257 Weatherby Magnum equipped with a 26” Shilen barrel and topped with a Meopta Meopro 2-10×42 scope.

I’ve been shooting factory ammo, which drives the 100gn bullet at 3550fps for deer hunting, and have already taken two fallow, a red and a rusa deer with it.

Can you tell me how to sight-in this outfit to gain the flattest trajectory? Also, could you suggest a load for the Hornady 100gn bullet using AR2213sc?

Basil Lawry

A: The nominal muzzle velocity of the factory 100gn load is 3550fps. If you sight-in the rifle 3” high at 100yd, it will be 4” high at 200, 1.5” high at 300, drop 6” at 400 and 19 at 500 (metric equivalents are 8.3cm high at 100m for 11.1cm high at 200m, 4.2cm high at 300m, 16.7cm low at 400m and 53cm low at 500m). That’s what I’d call a pretty flat trajectory.

I’d use slow-burning AR2217 with that Hornady bullet and work up from 75gn, one grain at a time. The maximum charge is 78gn for about 3575fps.
