Rifle barrel shape does not affect rigidity

Q: Would an octagonal barrel be more rigid than a round barrel? I plan on having my Winchester Model 70 Classic rebarrelled in .270 Weatherby Magnum with a straight-taper 26-inch octagon barrel.

My goal is to get an accurate rifle without having too thick and heavy a barrel.

I also thought about using a round barrel, and having it fluted to lessen the weight.

The gunshop guy told me the octagonal barrel will resist whip better than a plain round barrel of the same weight.

I’d appreciate your opinion on this.

A: Regardless of configuration, a heavy barrel will have more resistance to whip than a lighter one.

Barrels of the same weight and sectional diameter will have the same factor in this respect.

Deep fluting that changes the sectional diameter could affect this. Otherwise, the external contour is not critical.
