Q: Recently, I was given an ex-military Mauser 98 action which carries the marking “ZBROJOVKA BRNO A.S. VZ 24” on the left side of the receiver. It also has the Czechoslovak coat of arms on the top of the receiver.
Is this action strong enough to build a .280 Ackley Improved? I realise it will need a lot of work done on it to customise it, but already I have a Walther barrel and a figured walnut blank.

A: I consider the Czech-made VZ-24 one of the best Mauser actions for building a custom rifle.
My own 7mm Harvey Magnum is based on a modified VZ-24 action and it withstands high-pressure loads which crowd the 7mm Remington Magnum.
If your VZ-24 is in good condition, go ahead.
