The South Australia Police (SAPOL) Firearms Branch is undertaking an overhaul of its firearms licensing computer systems and is giving shooters and dealers in the Festival State the chance to have input until 7 July.
The system upgrades are part of the state connecting its firearms registry systems to the planned National Firearms Register (NFR), which is scheduled to come online at some point next year,
An email was sent to 40,000 shooters in South Australia from Detective Superintendent Lauren Leverington, the officer in charge of SAPOL Firearms Branch, asking about “your experiences with your firearms licence and firearms processes and the quality of our current service”.
“To assist us in building a system which is fit for purpose for both our team and the firearms licensee community, SAPOL is conducting a confidential survey for firearm licence holders,” the email says.
“This survey seeks feedback from licence holders like you about your experiences with your firearms licence and firearms processes and the quality of our current service.
“Your input will play a vital role in improving how we manage firearm licences, permits and registrations, making it easier for everyone involved.
“EY Sweeney, an independent company, is facilitating the survey ensuring anonymity and compliance with privacy laws. All personal details and responses will remain secure within SAPOL systems, with only combined survey results shared to help improve the process.”
The email further says the new system will involve “improving the delivery of firearms related services to the South Australian community by introducing a user-friendly digital services portal” which will “enable the efficient delivery of digital firearm services for licence holders and dealers”.
It is understood the new system will have similarities to the GunSafe portal used by NSW, and that online PTAs will also likely be part of the new system.
Shooters Union South Australia president Peter Heggie confirmed the email was legitimate and encouraged all shooters in the South Australia to complete the survey.
“The aim of the survey is to get feedback is to ensure the new SAPOL firearms systems are the best and most effective for industry and shooters they can be,” he said.
“SAPOL have told us they have sent out 40,000 emails and only received 2975 responses. Obviously this is only a fraction of the shooters in SA and we really need as many shooters as possible to respond so we can get an effective and user-friendly system.
“If they don’t get the feedback, how can they get the system right first time?
“Fill the survey in; it will actually help this be the best system it can be.”
The survey should take about 10 minutes to complete and is open to South Australian firearms licence holders until 7 July.
