The Aussies are off to a great start at the Oceania Continental Shooting Championship (29 November to December 5), with some excellent results across the competition.
At the half-way point of the competition Australia has won 13 of the 15 Individual Commonwealth Games events shot so far. The two Commonwealth Games individual events yet to be contested are Men’s Trap and Men’s 50m Pistol.
Highlights from the competition have included the comeback of defending 2010 Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist Alethea Sedgman (Natimuk, Vic), who won the Silver medal in Women’s 3P Rifle yesterday. The championship title for Women’s 3P went to Jenna Mackenzie from New Zealand, who took the lead with just two shots remaining. Fellow Kiwi Rowena Stackhouse won the 50m Rifle Prone title in a tightly contested match.
With her sights set firmly on the Commonwealth Games, Maria Rebling (Woonona, NSW) has clinched the Oceania championship title in Women’s Air Rifle. Rebling was a junior national champion in Germany, before immigrating to Australia. The second place went to rising star Emma Adams (Old Reynella, SA).
Youngster Jack Rossiter (Onkaparinga Hills, SA) held his nerve in the Men’s Air Rifle final to take his first major win from Dane Sampson (Findon, SA) who came second. This is Rossiter’s debut Oceania event. The 50m Men’s Prone Championship title went to Beijing Olympic bronze medallist and current Australian number one Warren Potent (Currans Hill, NSW).
Over in the Shotgun discipline, Women’s Double Trap was won by Gaye Shale (Rutherglen, Vic), while Women’s Skeet was won by Laura Coles (Hocking, WA). Coles is currently ranked number one in Australia in Women’s Skeet. The Women’s Trap title went to Emma Cox (Mooroopna, Vic).
There were surprise packets in the Men’s Shotgun events, with the Men’s Skeet title going to Daniel Baskerville (Arncliffe, NSW), while youngster Andrew Smith (Bookaar, VIC) took the Gold in Men’s Double Trap.
In the Pistol discipline, Lalita Yauhleuskaya (Berwick, Vic) dominated the competition, with her double win across the 25m Pistol Women and 10m Air Pistol events.
Over in the Men’s events, Gary Mullens (Castlemaine, Vic) won the Gold in the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event, while veteran athlete Queenslander Bruce Favell won the Gold medal in the 10m Pistol Men’s event.
Competition continues across the week, with Youth Olympic Games (YOG) quota places up for grabs over Wednesday and Thursday in the Junior Men’s and Junior Women’s Air Pistol and Air Rifle events.
