Hats off to the Russians
The manufacturers of Australia’s iconic Akubra hats have this week dumped their Australian rabbit skin suppliers in favour of importing fur from Russia. According to a report in the Weekly Times, Akubra say their Aussie suppliers don’t have the capacity to supply enough skins. It’s a move that has Bob Katter threatening to hang up his trademark Akubra in protest.
Capital’s kanga cull criticised
Australia’s main kangaroo meat processor has slammed the annual ‘roo cull in the ACT, which has now finished up for 2015. According to the ABC, a Macro Meats director says the Capital’s kangas should be harvested commercially, not buried and wasted.
FGA distances itself from Adler outrage
According to the Weekly Times, the Field and Game Association has distanced itself from comments made in the press by two of its members about the Adler lever action shotgun. The members, from the Goulburn Valley region of Victoria, stated they thought that the new lever action should be reclassified as Category C firearms, sparking a social media storm of outrage from shooters around the country. Dog bounty scrapped
The Victorian Government wild dog bounty officially finished last week. As reported in the Weekly Times, 2129 dog scalps had been collected since 2011, including 78 handed in by one hunter.
Thales Lithgow secures $100 million contract for new ADF rifle
Thales will reportedly hire approximately ten new workers at Lithgow after securing a $100 million contract to supply small arms to the Australian Defence Force, according to this report from the ABC. Â Thales won the tender to provide the ADF with the enhanced Austeyr F-88 rifles.
