Hunter’s Diary competition winners announced

The winners of Sporting Shooter’s 2024 Hunter’s Diary short story competition, supported by Hunting Depot, have been decided and their Vanguard prizes are being sent to them.

The author of every published entry through the year won a Vanguard Scout B62 bipod worth $95, and now the three major prizes have been awarded.

Scott McCahon’s entry, Dear Dog Diary published in the July 2024 magazine, has won first prize of a Vanguard Endeavor HD 82A Spotting scope with case, which normally retails for $750. We learnt a lot from his brief description of how he increased his success rate against wild dog by keeping track of all his encounters with them.

Mat Irwin’s story of stalking red deer with his son, An Awesome Hunt, has earned him a set of Vanguard VEO HD 10×42 binoculars worth $699. Published in the August 2024 edition, this story just made us want to get out in the bush and hunt these magnificent game animals.

Andrew Collis has won a Vanguard Endeavor RL 303CGM Carbon tripod with gun vice head, valued at $649, for his story Five From Five in the October 2024 issue. His description of hiding behind a few twigs while sneaking up on pigs made us laugh.

All three stories will be re-published on our website over the next few months.

The same great prizes are up for grabs in 2025 and we’re taking entries now.

Entering is easy! Just write a story of 200-400 words and email it to the editor, along with a good high-resolution photo (ie, at least 1MB in size) as well as your name and contact details. Don’t worry too much about the spelling and grammar, as we’ll sort that out, just as long as you can string together an entertaining yarn for us.

You can find all the details here
