Graham bagged a deer on his new hunting grounds
First morning out on a new block and Graham bagged this red hind

Hunter’s Diary: Queen of the reds

I got onto a new hunting property after offering help with the neighbour’s rabbit problems.

First morning hunt there, I was out just a little after first light. I checked three small gullies before walking the little ridge on the second-last gully.

Every published entry in the Hunter’s Diary short story competition receives a Vanguard Scout B62 bipod, and goes in the draw to win other Vanguard gear. All you have to do it submit a story and photo just like this one. It’s all thanks to Hunting Depot! Click here to find out how.

I sat and had a quick look before spotting a nice red hind about 60m below me. The wind was gusty over the hilltop but was constantly in my face. I moved into a better position, cracking a small stick.

Another hind walked into view from the underside of the valley I couldn’t see down into. I made a pretty good shot with the .308 and she did a quick sprint before hitting a tree and falling.

At the same time another 10 or more reds ran out that I hadn’t seen before. No antlers, so I let them pass at about 20m before they ran into an open paddock.

I found this unusual. I thought they would have gone for cover, but the herd of hinds seemed confused and didn’t know who to follow to safety. Later I realised I had probably shot the matriarch of the group, leaving the herd leaderless. Plenty of meat and a great hunt to remember.
