Q: I am thinking about buying a new rifle in 28 Nosler for long range deer hunting. The country where I do most of my hunting in the New England (NSW) is pretty open.
In places I often spot a deer at ranges as far away as 500 metres and it is difficult to stalk any closer.
Most of the kills with my .270 Winchester are made from 200 to 300 metres but I would like a cartridge that will reach out the full distance.
Do you think the 28 Nosler is a good choice?

A: I think you have made a good choice since it will kill a deer out at 500m with a well-placed shot.
The criterion of what any 7mm cartridge will do is with a nicely pointed 160gn bullet and the 28 Nosler produces a muzzle velocity of over 1000m/s (3300fps) with a 160gn bullet, which turns up some impressive energy figures.
At the muzzle the 28 Nosler produces 5246J (3869ft-lb) and at 457m (500yd) it is still carrying 2808J (2071ft-lb)‚ or about what your .270 Winchester carries at 91m (100yd).
Sighted-in 76mm high at 100m (2.75” at 100yd), the 160gn Nosler AccuBond at 1006m/s (3300fps) is about 9.5cm high at 200m (3.4” at 200yd), zeroed at 275m (300yd), and drops 23cm at 400m (8” at 400yd) and 60cm at 500m (21.2” at 500yd).
Recoil is not too bad, just a little heavier than the 7mm Rem Mag.
