Q: I primarily hunt fallow and red deer, but occasionally go after sambar south of the border. The combination I use for all deer hunting is a Winchester Model 70 in .270 Win with 150gn Nosler Partition handloads.
I’d like to move up to a more powerful cartridge and am considering a Howa 1500 in 7mm Rem Mag or perhaps some other economy-class rifle in .300 Win Mag.
Which rifle and cartridge would you recommend? What Nosler bullet and load should I use?
My finances are not looking too healthy just now.

A: If you haven’t got the cash to splash on a new rifle, there’s an obvious solution. Why not do what I did and have your Model 70 Winchester re-chambered to .270 Weatherby Magnum?
I’ve taken any number of deer with mine and also used it very successfully on safari in Namibia.
I had great results on deer using the Barnes 130gn bullet and 75gn of RE-22 for 3340fps and the Nosler 150gn Partition Gold and 72gn of RE-22 for 3250fps.
The Partition Gold has been discontinued, but the present Partition should work just fine, if you are set on using Nosler.
