.350 Wells Express

.350 Wells Express: a real behemoth!

Q: I read a hunting story wherein the hunter used a wildcat cartridge called the .350 Wells Express and raved about how it “steamrolled” big game.

He did say he was shooting a 250gn Remington bullet, but gave no details of the velocity, ballistics etc.

What can you tell me about this cartridge?

– Tom Evans

A: The .350 Wells Express is based on the .378 Weatherby case necked down to .35 calibre. This monster holds about 130 grains of water.

Ballistics list a Speer 180gn flat-nose generating 3755fps ahead of 114gn of IMR 4350.

The Speer 220gn flat-nose does 3427fps ahead of 108gn of IMR 4350.

The Speer 250gn spitzer has a muzzle velocity of 3133fps ahead of 100gn of IMR 4350.

A Remington 250gn bullet and 102gn of IMR 4350 produces 3215fps.

Why the flat-nose bullets? Search me, but I bet it would hit like a runaway express train!
