Hunter’s Diary: the mountain goat hunt

There were billy goats on the mountain and I wanted a trophy to mount and, if possible, some meat.

I put on the wet weather gear, loaded my pack and set off in the drizzle.

I had to veer to the left of the mountain to keep the wind in my face. Fortuitously, the rain backed off as I made my ascent with gusto.

Once I started climbing the mountain, I lost sight of the stinkies. I was having a breather in a clump of trees when I heard some bleating.

The goats came over the lip of the mountain, heading straight for me. I didn’t move a muscle as they came closer and closer.

Then I spotted the big guy: multi-coloured with nice thick horns. An old warrior with the perfect cape!

From the mob of 30, he was the only goat not presenting a shot. I had four goats come within 10 metres of me and still feeding closer. Finally the old billy stepped out from behind a tree.

I poleaxed him with my .260 Remington, quickly worked the bolt and shot a young billy, too.
