A Deer Load For The .225 Winchester

Q: I have an old push-feed Winchester Model 70 in .225 Win. calibre that I recently bought very cheaply. It has a Bushnell 3-9x scope with Command Post reticle which I like very much and about 200 once-fired cases and 150 70gn Speer bullets. Can you suggest a load for the 70gn Speer that will handle goats, pigs and fallow deer. I’m no trophy hunter and want the deer for meat.

The .225 Winchester with heavy-for-calibre bullets is competent on smaller deer species like fallow or chital. Image: Arpingstone.

AR2209 from a .225 Winchester he’d have some venison. Velocity at the muzzle is around 3050 fps. Retained velocity at 200 yards is about 1800 ft/lbs – surely adequate for medium game.
