Heavy bullets in the .270

Q: I use a Winchester Model 70 Super Grade in .270 Winchester for all my big-game hunting, including sambar. This year I am taking it to Africa and my list includes kudu and eland.

Is the Nosler 160gn Partition a practical choice for my rifle? How about the Barnes 150gn MRX BT? Which will penetrate deeper when angling shots on these big animals must be taken?

Can you suggest a load for each of these bullets?

Brian Murphy

A: For all-round use in both open and bush country, I have always preferred the flatter trajectories of bullets no heavier than 150gn in the .270 and it should be potent eland medicine.

The 160gn Partition at 2800fps (853m/s) may appear to be a better choice for hunting in bush country where the shots are likely to be quite a bit closer, but I’d rather the 150gn Barnes MRX which has a high BC of .425.

It can be driven out of a 24-inch (61cm) barrel at 2900fps (884m/s) by 55gn of RE-19 or 56gn of AR2213sc.

If the Barnes bullet is unobtainable, another good choice would be the Woodleigh 150gn PP SN and 51gn of RE-17 for about the same velocity. Both have plenty of penetration.
