Winchester Model 70 trigger

Original Model 70 trigger

Q: Why did Winchester change the trigger on their Classic Model 70? In my opinion there was none better and I much preferred it over the ones they’ve replaced it with. What do you think?

– Jack Wilson

A: I agree with you! The original Model 70 trigger was beyond simple: two major parts, plus a screw, a spring and a couple of little nuts.

The spring, screw and nuts allow the trigger to be adjusted for over-travel and pull weight in a matter of minutes.

Today we see extremely complex encased triggers with levers, tiny parts that freeze or get dusty and seize up.

The brute-strong, simple Model 70 trigger was the best ever seen on a hunting rifle and was rugged and foolproof. I’ve never known one to give any trouble.
