Ruger rotary magazine problem

Q: I have been experiencing an ejection problem with my Ruger 10/22, which showed up only after I’d disassembled and cleaned the Ruger rotary magazine.

Do you know what causes this problem? Do I need a new magazine?

Henry Baker

A: When reassembling the spring-rotor system you must be careful not to increase spring tension beyond the 1¼ turns the factory recommends.

Doing so increases the friction between the top cartridge and the bottom of the bolt, and this reduces the bolt’s rearward velocity.

But the reverse is also true. Tensioning the rotor spring less than the required 1¼ turns can also cause feeding problems, especially in rapid firing.
