Q: I’m wondering if you can give me a good modern load for the 6.5x55mm with 140gn projectile and ADI powder as I am looking to upgrade my old Husqvarna to a Tikka T3 Hunter. I’ve been told that most of the published reloading data for the 6.5x55mm is for old Mauser 96s and that modern rifles can safely handle hotter loads. Is this true?

A: While it’s true that much of the published loading data for the 6.5x55mm Swedish Mauser was developed in old Swedish 96 Mausers, don’t think for a minute that these old rifles are weak. They are not, and the maximum loads listed are probably good working loads for a modern rifle like the Tikka T3 Hunter. But in any case you’d be wise to work up from the published starting load to find a safe maximum load for your particular rifle. In my custom M96 I loaded 45gn of AR2209 behind the Sierra 140gn bullet for 2630fps. I don’t think you’ll exceed that safely in a Tikka T3.
