.325 Winchester Short Magnum Cartridge

The .325 WSM Has An Edge

.325 Winchester Short Magnum Cartridge

Q
I’ve been living in Australia for five years and buy Sporting Shooter because of your contributions. I am a keen deer stalker but wonder with all your experience, if you had only one gun what would it be? I am a .30-06 man, but bought a Kimber .325 WSM which is starting to win me over. What are your two best loads for the above calibres?

A
If I could only own one deer rifle it would most likely be a .325 WSM, which, although it lacks popularity in this country, is a wonderful all-around big-game cartridge. As you may have read, I have a Model 70 Winchester in .325 WSM and shot four deer with it this year at ranges from 70 to 200 yards – all one shot kills. In the .30-06 I load the 150gn Woodleigh bullet and 60gn of AR2209 for 2940fps; in the .325 WSM I am using the 185gn Core-Lokt bullet and 67gn of AR2209 for 2940fps; the 200gn Speer Hot Cor and 60gn of AR2208 for 2920fps; and the 200gn Barnes X and 66gn of Re-19 for 2820fps. The Kimber is a nicely designed rifle fitted with a well-shaped stock. Good luck with it.
