The Labor Party should ditch Anthony Albanese as Prime Minister after “the collapse of the Government’s hate speech bill and a growing pattern of policy failure” all the way back to the failed Voice to Parliament campaign, says Shooters Union Australia.
The call has come as Albanese presents new gun laws to federal parliament after separating them from hate-speech legislation that was so poorly conceived it was rejected by all sides of politics even before it was debated.
The firearms legislation is equally flawed, according to the Shooters Union, which wants it too scrapped despite Albanese pressing ahead with it.
“This is not principled law-making. It is political damage control,” Shooters Union president Graham Park said.
“Nothing about these firearms proposals would have prevented the Bondi Beach terrorist attack.
“Instead, the Prime Minister appears to be attempting to salvage his own leadership position by redirecting blame and public anger towards one of the most highly regulated, vetted, and compliant communities in Australia — lawful firearms owners.
Mr Park pointed a string of failures by the Prime Minister, including “the failed Voice referendum, worsening housing affordability, persistent cost-of-living pressures and an inability to articulate or implement any credible national strategy to address terrorism, anti-Semitism, or hate-motivated violence targeting Australian communities”.
“The Federal Labor Party needs to reconsider Mr Albanese’s role as party leader and Prime Minister as a matter of urgency,” he said.
“If the Government abandons this legislation and commits to genuine consultation, Shooters Union Australia and the broader firearms community are ready to work constructively with policymakers to design laws that actually reduce the risk of terrorism and meaningfully improve public safety.
“Responsible firearms owners are part of the solution — not a convenient distraction from political failure.”
