Handgun reloaders in parts of Australia received a pleasant surprise recently when limited stock of long-unavailable ADI pistol powders suddenly appeared on the shelves at some gun dealers.
Small quantities of APS650 and Trail Boss powder arrived at a number of dealers — notably in South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland — earlier this week, and unsurprisingly the shipments have been selling rapidly, with several of the receiving dealers sold out in record time.
ADI pistol powders have been essentially unavailable for several years due to manufacturing difficulties at ADI’s new propellant factory, which has been disastrous for Australian pistol shooters who have been forced to buy commercial ammunition or use their existing personal powder supplies — many of which are now severely depleted.
APS650 is the replacement for the discontinued AP70N, which was a versatile and popular handgun powder similar to Alliant’s Unique, while Trail Boss is popular with Cowboy Action shooters for use in cartridges such as .44-40, .45 Long Colt and .45/70.
Trail Boss is also very useful for making subsonic or reduced loads in a number of fullbore rifle cartridges.
ADI has confirmed that the APS range of pistol powders is scheduled for production in “late 2024/early 2025”, as are Trail Boss and AR2205 powders, so fingers crossed regular supplies will become available in the new year.
