Dogs clean up Macquarie Island’s ferals.

In a plus for the environment on the sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island, hunting with dogs has played a major role in ridding the island of an established rabbit infestation. Yes, that’s right, from a peak of 150,000 rabbits in the mid-seventies, to total eradication on what is a wildlife reserve, is a magnificent result. In the leadup to the final efforts with dogs, the Government had employed hunters to shoot and bait as well, with Myxamatosis figuring in earlier efforts.
