Victoria’s Game Management Authority (GMA) has launched a series of new online education modules as part of its efforts to support responsible hunting in the Garden State.
The courses, which are self-paced, cover a range of topics which will be useful for anyone with an interest in hunting, regardless of whether they’re using firearms, bows, or dogs to pursue their quarry.
A number of the units will be useful even for people who do not hunt in Victoria.
Some of the courses on offer include:
- Introduction to firearms (developed in association with Firearms Safety Foundation Victoria)
- Hunting essentials (including hunting laws and permissible hunting locations)
- Basic survival skills (including basic first aid, emergency preparedness, and navigation techniques)
- Bowhunting basics (including laws, equipment selection, and permissible bowhunting locations)
- Hound hunting basics (including an overview of the laws, hound assessment and registration process, best care practices, required training/field experience for pups)
In addition to the broad hunting and outdoors skills modules, there are also modules dedicated to hunting specific game in Victoria, notably:
- Deer hunting basics (includes deer characteristics, behaviour, habitats, hunting techniques and the laws relating to deer hunting and spotlighting)
- Duck hunting basics (includes duck hunting laws, duck appearances, habitat, calls and effective hunting techniques for different biomes)
- Quail and introduced gamebirds (includes the laws on hunting quail and game birds, hunting methods and equipment)
The courses are all free and can be accessed via the GMA website.
