Pure gold: Laetisha Scanlan on the top of the podium at the Qatar Open.

Laetisha’s winning streak continues in Qatar

Victorian Laetisha Scanlan has continued her perfect start to 2013 with victory in the women’s trap at the Qatar Open in Doha.

Scanlan, who last month swept to her first national title, was calm and composed across the three qualifying rounds, before standing out in the semi-final and final of the event.

Scanlan, 22, qualified for the semi-finals in a three way tie for second place on 72 targets from a possible 75, one target behind fellow Australian Teegan McCloy who had shot an excellent score of 73.

With the top two of the six semi-finalists progressing to the gold medal match, Scanlan shot 13 from 15 to equal Qatar’s Amna Al Abdulla and reach the 15 shot final.

The Victorian proved too strong in the final, shooting another 13 single barrel targets to clinch the gold medal by four.

Scanlan, who has now won all three events she has contested under the new ISSF rules, said she was really happy with her overall performance.

“The conditions were great out there today and it is a fantastic shooting range to shoot at in terms of weather and targets,” Scanlan said.

“I’m really happy with the way I shot but it was also great to see how all the Aussie girls went today. We have a great developing squad and we are definitely pushing each other along.”

The 22-year-old headlined the team’s performance which saw three other Australians finish in the top 10 – McCloy (4th), Penny Smith (7th) and Catherine Skinner (10th).

All four girls are part of the 2016 Focus Squad, underlining the depth of talent that is currently being developed across Australia.

The 2016 Focus Squad will take part in a four day camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra next week as they continue to develop into future Australian Olympians.
