My rifle, my pony and me…

I cannot resist a good western, or even a bad one sometimes. I’d say Rio Bravo was up there but The Searchers would have to be my all-time favourite western, while Nick Harvey’s is Lonesome Dove.

In a quieter reflective scene in Rio Bravo, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson and Walter Brennan team up to perform “My rifle, my pony and me” for a coffee-swigging Duke in a heart-tugging tune if ever there was one.

It’s set in Texas in the latter half of the 19th Century and as such you have to suspend belief a little when you see Ricky Nelson’s 1960s bouffant brushback hairdo. Hell! They had to get the girls to go to the movies too. I don’t half mind the Colt Single-action Army revolver on John Wayne’s hip, nor Walter Brennan’s “harmonicky blowin” though.
