The life of the late gun-writer Nick Harvey was recognised in NSW Parliament in a touching speech given by Shooters, Fishers and Farmers MLC Robert Borsak this week.
In a Notice of Motion speech, Mr Borsak called on the house to recognise that “Nick Harvey had made a significant contribution to NSW, Australia and world shooting, reloading and hunting over 70 years that will long be remembered in rifle ranges and around campfires across Australia”.
“Nick Harvey was one of the world’s most prolific and knowledgable gun and shooting writers and has left a legacy built on almost seven decades of dedication to firearms and hunting,” he said.
“Nick’s most important contributions were a series of reloading manuals, beginning in 1980 and concluding with Nick Harvey’s Practical Reloading Manual 11 Edition in 2021.
“Throughout my own life, like several other generations of hunters around Australia, I have used and consulted these books for my own reloading.
“Nick was always an affable and approachable man, ready and willing to talk to experts and beginner shooters, reloaders and hunters alike and freely offer his sage advice.”
Mr Borsak brought up the fact that Nick, in an era long before this one, would shoot ferals from the window of the school bus that he drove on his country run.
“Maybe the Ministers for transport, agriculture and education could get their heads together on this,” he quipped. “This may be a partial solution to the current feral animal control challenges facing NSW — especially horses.” It drew a wry response.
He also asked the house to pass on its condolences to Nick’s family.
“The hunter is home from the hill,” he concluded.
