Browning’s takedown levergun

The Browning BLR has been around for over 40 years and has gone through several configurations. The latest takedown version fits handily into your rucksack or an inconspicuous short guncase.

THE BROWNING BLR is an exception to the traditional rear-locking lever-action design. It is unique in that it retains the flat-sided receiver, two-piece stock, and exposed hammer design of classic lever guns while incorporating a front-locking multi-lug breechbolt. The bolt body is grooved longitudinally, and these grooves align with the bolt lug interruptions when the bolt is unlocked. Alternating straight “lands” broached into the interior of the receiver mate with the bolt body grooves during fore-and-aft travel. This makes for very smooth operation. More importantly, the front ends of these lands become the locking lug abutments when the bolt is closed, and since they run the full length of the receiver, this unique modern adaptation of a leveraction rifle is not only exceedingly strong, but it shoots as well as a good many bolt-actions.

Back in the early 1960s I owned one of the original Belgian-made BLRs in .308 Winchester that I used very successfully for several years deer hunting. It was short and handy, fast to get into action and the smoothworking, short-stroke lever allowed fast follow-up shots at running game.
