Don’t Soup Up The .240 Weatherby

Question:My only centrefire rifle is a Weatherby Vanguard Series II in .240 Weatherby Magnum for which I’ve been reloading using Norma unprimed brass. The load I’ve been using most is one you listed in your article about this cartridge in a past issue of Sporting Shooter – 100gn Lapua and 53gn of Re-22 for 3300fps in a 600mm barrel. I am unable to source Re-22 and have settled on 53gn of Supreme 780 which duplicates the velocity and accuracy I was getting with the same charge of Re-22. I read an article in an American magazine by a chap who reckoned he could drive 100gn bullets at 3500fps from his 240 Wby. Do you think this is possible?

Nick’s FN Supreme in.240 Weatherby Magnum shooting 100gn bullets proved deadly medicine on boars just about as far away as he can see to hit ‘em.

A I am glad you like the .240 Wby Magnum, but for Pete’s sake don’t crowd it. If you do, the barrel will not last. Keep loading it to 3300-3350fps and leave well enough alone. Don’t attempt to get 3500fps with 100gn bullets, the game won’t be able to tell any difference. I seldom use lighter bullets in my FN Mauser rifle for deer and other game. I don’t think it is possible to get 3500fps with a 100gn bullet in the.240 Wby at anything like safe pressures.
