Cold Mountain Boar

We picked the June long weekend to hunt mountain boars in the Snowy High Country of southern NSW.

We encountered snow, ice and sleet. Beautiful!

After unpacking our gear, the six of us rode our motorbikes towards the rear of the property to look for pigs.

As we came around a corner in the track a big brindle mountain boar on top of the next ridge took off.

Four of the boys rode towards the boar but Mick and I knew which way he was heading. We veered to the left of the mountain and followed a small creek.

We got off the bikes and walked up the creek-line. A minute later the boar appeared on the ridge directly above us.

Mick fired first with his .308 and winged him, then the boar bolted straight down the mountain at us.

I slowly and deliberately led him perfectly. He cartwheeled at the shot, and rolled down the hill to within 20 metres of where we were standing.

The Howa .22-250 did its job. He was a good solid mountain boar and turned out to be the only pig for the trip.
