I have been receiving the Macquarie Island Dispatch from Keith Springer, officer-in-charge of the Macquarie Island Pest Eradication Project for the Tasmainian Parks and Wildlife Service.
Through painstaking and thorough methodology they have achieved great success in the control of cats, rats and mice and these measures have resulted in increased bird numbers on the sub-Antarctic habitat.
This latest newsletter details the way their hunters have untertaken almost total rabbit eradication – hopefully soon to be complete – with the use of dogs and extended stints of demanding field work in trying conditions.
For the sake of the native animals and vegetation on the once pristine island, we have Keith and his hunters to thank
