Want to see a lot of excellent footage of bucks and other deer during the rut, with a lot of insight into their behaviour, as you follow a rut hunt in South Australia’s Water Valley?
Epidote three of the latest season of The Huntsman is one of the best yet as Chris Waters goes on a guided hunt with Happy Hunting Adventures during the fallow rut and red roar.
But the outcome of the hunt is a beautiful chital stag.
The hunt takes pace in unique country: incredibly thick bush and sand underfoot, and so it’s easy for hunters to quietly and remain concealed. Even when they’re detected, the deer often continue what they’re doing without running away.
There are bucks everywhere, and constant croaking. “I felt like the place was vibrating,” Chris says.
Chris doesn’t fire a shot, specifically waiting until he finds a fallow buck past its prime. He doesn’t go for the reds, either.
But when he unexpectedly stumbles across an excellent chital stag, the whole point of the hunt changes in a moment.
And that’s when a rather unusual stalk begins … and ends with a very close-range shot taken through a narrow window through the trees.
And if you’re up for more afterwards, check out the bonus episode with a fallow down and some typical Huntsman humour:
