Video: The Huntsman goes duck hunting

Duck hunting is very much a family sport and in this video Chris Waters celebrates the fact with an episode of The Huntsman celebrating nature, discovery, food, family and the joy of the hunt — with some hog deer thrown in.

Filmed during the 2024 Victorian duck season, the video features the Playdon family, including champion dog trainer Greg, hunting hosts Brett and Chantelle, son Will who is no newbie when it comes to hunting, and daughter Eloise.

The first morning’s hunt doesn’t set any records with just a single duck to show for it, but by day’s end there’s been some great cooking and educational scouting for hog deer as Chris and Will head into a blind.

Brett is a keen teacher of Will and takes him out hunting often, a subject Chris explores in the video. “Take your children hunting,” he says.

There’s a few good lessons in duck calling, too.

It takes a while on the second morning for many ducks to come in but once it starts the retriever is kept busy.

“Duck hunting remains alive and well in Victoria,” Chris says, something he attributes partly to the importance and influence of family ties.
